
The Office of the Ombudsman joined Government and other private institutions to commemorate workers day at the independence stadium in Bakau. The occasion provided the opportunity for sober-reflection and to remember the plight of workers across the country and those who struggled to ensure that the working class is not exploited. In The Gambia, it is customary for all workers to converge at one place to rejoice and reflect on the prevailing working conditions in their various institutions in the country.
This year’s 2018 May Day celebration was celebrated with a march pass from the standard newspaper in Bakau to the national stadium. Opening remarks were delivered by the Minister of Trade, Industry. Regional Integration and Employment Dr Isatou Touray who spoke at length on government plan to improve on the working condition of workers in the country. She also advice employees to asked for appointment letters prior to work and always confirm to ascertain the payment of their social security benefits. Other Remarks were delivered by the Minister of Youths and Sport and the President of The Gambia workers union.
